We get to watch those falling leaves "drift by our windows".Then we get to go out and clean up our yards.

Reminders for handling yard waste - DON'T mix anything in with leaves and limbs and do not put leaves in plastic bags. Please rake them into piles beside the street or on the curb, not in the street. There are some who will deliberately drive through a pile of leaves in the street just to make a bigger mess. Also, you should not put yard waste in your garbage cart or recycling bin. Put all other items you wish to discard in separate piles.

RECYCLING BINS- Blue recycling pins are for recycling only- Not regular garbage. If you are not sure about what items you can recycle we will be glad to give you a list.

GREASE - Don't pour grease down drains. It will eventually clog up the drain and cause sewer back - ups.

Community Activities - Deliverance Temple Christian Center located at 302 S. 2nd St., in Pinetops will be holding two Homebuyer Education Classes to help those interested in becoming a home buyer learn what it really takes to become a homeowner and financially informed.
With winter approaching and as temperatures get colder, a lot of us will crank our cars then return inside, while we wait for it to warm up. Please exercise caution when doing this. Remember, it only takes a thief a few seconds to steal a vehicle.

Also, you should keep your vehicles locked at all times. Don't leave any items in plain sight. Don't make it easy for a thief to steal from you.

E-911 addresses – If you have not given us your E-911 address, please get it to us as soon as possible. The post office is no longer delivering mail that does not have the correct 911 address on it. It is being returned to the town hall.

House numbers/Street addresses – Numbers must be placed in an area on the house or yard that is clearly visible from the street.
THE PINES May 2010

Summer like days are making an appearance already. If last week is a sign of things to come it’s gonna be a hot summer. Remember some energy saving tips: Keep curtains and blinds closed to the sun. Set your air conditioning at 78 degrees and leave it there. Make sure cracks around doors and windows are well sealed to keep the cool air in. Use your microwave or slow cooker as much as possible instead of using your stove. We have more energy saving tips at the Town Hall.

Included with this newsletter is a copy of our annual water report. Contact us if you have any questions regarding this report.

Due to rising cost of chemicals and required testing of the town’s water and sewer, rates will be increased effective with the June 1, 2010, billing. The increase will range from 3% to 10% depending on water usage. Those using less will see a smaller increase than those who use large quantities of water. Rate schedules are available at Town Hall.

A number of our customers have a water meter that they use just for watering lawns, gardens, washing cars, etc. Due to regulations that have been established by the State of N. C., any one that has a separate meter for watering must have a Back Flow Prevention Device installed as a safety precaution. This rule applies to any meter that has been installed regardless of how long it has been in place. These devices are fairly expensive. Because of this, separate meters without backflow preventers will be removed by October 1, 2010. If you have an in ground irrigation system, you must have a Back Flow Prevention Device installed if you have not already done so. Formore information on this, you can contact our office.

Beginning June 1, the town will pick up bulky items only one time per week. This includes old appliances, TV’s, mattresses, furniture, boards, and other items that are not discarded in the garbage cart or recycling bin. Items need to be placed out by the street on Thursdays no later than 8:00 a.m. Call the Town Hall at 827-4435 to let us know if you have something for pick up. If you have paint cans that still have wet paint in them, the best way to dispose of them is to remove the lid and put some sand or Cat Litter in the can. This will absorb the wet paint. Once the can is dry dispose of it by putting it in the garbage cart.

REMINDER: Utility bills are due the 15th of the month in which you receive it. Final date for payment to avoid service being cut off is the 25th of the month by 5:00 P.M. Cut-offs begin the morning of the 26th.

Example – Bill date – June 1, 2010 Due date – June 15, 2010 - Final payment date – June 25, 2010 –Cut off- June 26, 2010

Town Board meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month at 6:00 P.M. at the Town Hall.

The Town Hall and Utilities Department will be closed on Monday, May 31st. Garbage will be picked up on

Tuesday and Recycling will be picked up onWednesday.

HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY

Town of Pinetops March 2010

Is it over yet? Has winter finally gone? Weather forecasters say it has, but according to the calendar spring does not officially arrive until Saturday. It will be welcome whenever it gets here. This was the coldest winter on record for our area. During one stretch we had 17 days in a row when the temperature did not get above 34. We have several items that we need to make our customers aware of. These are listed below.

WATER LINE PROJECT – The water line project that has been in progress over the last several months is nearing completion. If you live in an area where new water lines have been installed, let us know if you see something that needs attention – i.e. – holes that need to be filled in or seeding for grass.

CENSUS – The Census Bureau is in the process of delivering forms to all residents for the purpose of recording all the people living in your house. You are required by law to complete and return these forms as soon as possible. The Pinetops and Tarboro Libraries are offering assistance in completing the form if you need help.

911 ADDRESSES & HOUSE NUMBERS - If you live outside the Town limits of Pinetops and are on the Town’s water line, please get your 911 address to us if you have not already done so. If you reside in the Town limits it is very important that you display your house number. This is vital information in case of an emergency when you may need rescue or law enforcement. The time saved in rescue or law enforcement locating your residence could save a life.

PINEVIEW CEMETERY – The Pinetops United Methodist Church has given the cemetery behind Pinetops Baptist Church to the Town. We will be responsible for the maintenance of the cemetery and the sale of lots. If you already own lots and don’t want the Town to cut the grass on your lot, please contact us right away. If you wish to purchase a lot/lots contact the Town Hall and we will be glad to assist you.

MEALS ON WHEELS – We need some Meals on Wheels volunteers to deliver meals in Pinetops. It only takes about 20 minutes and it is such a rewarding experience. If you are interested give us a call.
